13 Dalzel, Andreas Collectanea Graeca Majora Analekta Ellenika Meizona, sive Collectanea Graeca Majora ad usum Academicae Juventutis Accommodata: cum Notis Philologicis Tomus I
Boston Hilliard, Gray, Little, et Wilkins 1831 First Edition Hardcover Fair with no dust jacket
This is the famous Collectanea Graeca, the poets section, 364 pages of Greek 170 pages of detailed notes in Latin, keyed to the Greek text. Poets include Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Lysias, Isocrates, Artistotle, Plato, Dionysius Halicarnassis, Theoprastus, Aelianus and Polybius. The book is in bound in leather, front cover detached but present, spine covering worn, book block solid. Title page is browned and chipped, the preface has some tearing to the pages at the gutter, there is some pencil marginalia throughout and end papers have extensive mathematical notes in pencil. Book is an octavo measuring 5.5" x 8.5" There is an inscription AB.W. Dwight@ which we assume to be either Benjamin Woolsey Dwight or his son Benjamin Woodbridge Dwight who lived in Clinton, NY, and were connected with Hamilton College (the book was found in Clinton). Benjamin Woodbridge Dwight was the author of a treatise on the Indo-European languages and other philological works and we assume he was the owner of this volume, but that is just a guess on our part! The patriarch of the Dwight family was the President of Yale. There are other Dwight names in pencil under the BW, so it looks as though the book stayed in the family for a number of years. Foxing throughout and aged, but still usable.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
