11 Cibber, Colley (Lowe, Robert W., Ed.) An Apology for the Life of Mr. Colley Cibber, Written By Himself, A New Edition with Notes and Supplement By Robert W. Lowe, in Two Volumes
London John C. Nimmo 1889 First Edition Thus Cloth Fair with no dust jacket Illustrated by Parkes, R.B. & Lalauze, Adolphe
In 2 volumes, 337 pp & 416 pp, 26 original mezzotint portraits by R.B. Parkes and 18 etching by Adolphe Lalauze, limited edition of 510 copies, this is number 307. A new edition of the 1740 original autobiography of Colley Cibber, "interspersed with characters and anecdotes of his theatrical contemporaries, the whole forming a complete history of the stage for the space of forty years". Cibber was the Poet Laureate of England (a purely political appointment apparently) and a historian of the English theater. Lowe compared all six previous editions of Cibber's work, carefully going back to the original and what was known of Cibber's corrections. In addition he has brought a number of rare documents, including Historia Histrionica, a copy of the Patent granted to Sir William Davenant, and a supplementary chapter which includes "the chief incidents of theatrical history up to the time of Cibber's death" along with the story of his famous quarrel with Pope, and a list of Cibber's dramatic productions and a biblography of works by or relating to him. The book is ex-library with all the usual markings and has a dark red library binding with gilt spine, handsome, but nothing like the original leather. A number of the fly pages are loosening. The library strengthened the pages containing the truly beautiful mezzotints, but in doing so caused stress on the text pages resulting in cracks at the top of neighboring pages. In Vol. II, page 307 is loose and another page has a chip out of the corner, slightly affecting text. The mezzotints, however, are in good condition, and they alone are worth the price of admission. A reading copy set with beautiful plates.; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

London William Du-gard 1650 First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
This book is in good antiquarian condition. It has been handsomely rebound in 3/4 leather, marbled boards, endpapers renewed It is a small octavo and measures 5.25” x 7”. It is packed with numerous engraved portrait plates, the portrait area on page 320 blank as issued. Pagination is as follows [32], 352, 363-378, 389-500, [8] pages, the gaps represent numbering errors when the book was printed, as per bibliographic references, but the book is complete. The paper shows minor age-toning and foxing, the last two pages with ink inscriptions and notes in a very early hand (see photo), small corner tears on two pages repaired, printing sharp, engraved portraits sharp and beautifully printed. This is a very pleasing and handsome copy of what appears to be the scarce first edition . Although Worldcat (OCLC) erroneously lists a 1649 edition, it is actually the 1650 first edition; the preface is dated December 1649, but the title page reads MDCL [1650], see also Lowndes, p473, as well The Spirituality of the Later English Puritans: An Anthology, introduction. There was a second portion printed also in 1650, an expanded edition in 1654 and further expanded edition in 1675, these are not included here. But there is something quite unusual about this book, in that the edition from the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library which we checked this copy against does not include the full page portrait, which this edition does, but it does include a preliminary commendatory leaf, which this copy does not. But Lowndes, the principal British bibiliography, lists a 1650 edition with a 1649 portrait, which thus perhaps makes this technically a true 1649 first edition, a variant, that conforms otherwise, but perhaps with the portrait instead of a commendatory leaf, it was printed a bit earlier than the other first editions, ie. perhaps even in late December, 1649. This 1650 edition does not conform completely to either of the 1650 editions in ESTC, containing neither the title lines of the one, but containing a hyphen which is not on the 2nd -- again, not quite fitting either ESTC entry. The book is the famous Puritan biography of great Church fathers and leaders, from ancient Christians like Ignatius and Polycarp, Augustine and Ambrose, to Protestant founders like Luther and Calvin, and to later commentators like Theodore Beza and Joseph Scaliger. It is handsomely printed, and includes numerous beautiful engraved portraits of the Christian luminaries, followed by their biographies. This book has been professionally rebound with contemporary looking leather spine with gilt lettering and leather corners, and marbled hardcover boards. A truly beautiful edition. This book contains the curious poem on the back of the title page, “from the licencer to the Autor, concerning his book”....This Book doth make the dead to live, This Book will live, when you are dead, This Book will make you live, when dead, This Book therefore I make to live. The author, Samuel Clarke or Clark (1599–1683) was an English clergyman and significant Puritan biographer ; Copper plate; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
