A Synopsis of the Genera of American Plants, According to the Latest Improvements on the Linnean System: With the new Genera of Michaux and others., (Rich, O.)
1 (Rich, O.) A Synopsis of the Genera of American Plants, According to the Latest Improvements on the Linnean System: With the new Genera of Michaux and others.
Georgetown, D.C. Carter, J.M. for J. Milligan and others 1814 First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
viii + 167 + [3] pp including ad on [169]. Index. 3/4 leather with hard paper boards. Leather spine just a little rubbed, gilt bright and legible , leather corners a little rubbed, boards a bit rubbed as well with old small name sticker at bottom front. Interior has names of Heydrick family of Philadelphia, 1816 on end papers in a few different hands along with some doodling, more Heydrick family on 2nd fly. Title page and following leaf have light humidity stain, title page recto and verso have small pencil point black spot atop printer's name, page 54 has some small brown spots at the bottom which have oxidized surrounding pages, some general foxing and toning but otherwise clean and unmarked, publisher's ad at [169] is trimmed close at fore-edge and is cut shorter than the rest of the leaves and has quite a bit of foxing and some humidity staining, last two blanks have a bit of the same humidity staining at the gutter. Binding is solid. Quite scarce in commerce, this is a sound and attractive copy. Attributed to O. Rich, who is sometimes identified as Oliver O. Rich and otherwise as Obadiah Rich, the bibliographer whose brother was a botanist. An 1816 articles refers to "publisher O. Rich" while an 1849 article identifies "O. Rich" as the compiler. Library of Congress says that the O. Rich attribution is probably mistakenly applied from a flyleaf inscription. It seems unlikely that the bibliographer Obadiah Rich branched out into botany in the middle of his otherwise unplant-related career. The mystery of the author aside, this is a nice copy of a scarce title. OCLC 82200696; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall

12 City of Charleston List of the tax payers of the city of Charleston, for 1859.
Charleston, S.C. Walker, Evans 1860 First Edition Hardcover Fair with no dust jacket
402 pages (should be 407), no title. Handsomely library bound in black buckram with bright gilt to spine, covers are clean and nice. Interior end papers have signature of James H. Rodolph who seems to have been on the board of directors of a cemetery in Charleston in the 1920s. End papers and blanks renewed. Title is missing. First text page of the book is the opening of the List, starting with Abrahams, A.H. who owned $3,000 worth of real estate and paid $45 in taxes. This page is very foxed, corners repaired, hole in page not affecting text repaired with tape, page remounted. Next few pages are very foxed with some staining, small hole. Foxing and staining taper off a bit until page 25 when there is moderate foxing throughout with occasional heavy foxing. The Tax on Propery paid by Free Persons of Color starts at page 383 (with its separate title page). Page 387 is remounted, 389 has repair at bottom gutter, 391-395 have repairs and damage at bottom gutter with some text affected although the intent and spelling is clear. 397-399 have sections missing at the bottom gutter (about 3 inches) with some repair but text definitely gone. 401/402 have a large piece gone -- the last entry is for Betsey Walker who owned real estate and slaves (even tho she herself was a Free Person of Color), but we can't see the dollar value of her holdings. Rodolph's signature again on the last end paper. Binding is sturdy. Paper is aged and damaged in spots as described but except for the last few pages still legible and strong. Extremely scarce: WorldCat shows 9 copies worldwide and it has not yet made it to Googlebooks or to one of the reprint houses. With faults, but still a very scarce and fascinating piece of history.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
