Gould, Marcus T.C. The Trial of Alexander McLeod, for the Murder of Amos Durfee, at the Burning and Destruction of the Steamboat Caroline, by the Canadians, December 29th, 1837. Gould's Stenographic Reporter. Vol. II (complete) Washington, D.C. Marcus T.C. Gould 1841 1st Edition Hard Cover Fair-Good No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 416 pp. Vol. II, Nos. 1,2,3,4,5,6 of the 1841 edition of Gould's Stenographic Reporter, "devoted to the recording of important trials,". A report, complete, of the trial of Canadian rebel Alexander McLeod, who was a party of men who seized the American steamboat, the Caroline, murdered the only man on board (Durfee), set the ship ablaze and sent it over Niagara Falls. The events caused tensions between the British government and the Americans, who were both anxious to avoid another war. The story had died down somewhat when Alexander boasted of his deeds while visiting upstate New York in 1840, and was seized, jailed and indicted for murder. This book documents the 8 day trial that took place at Utica, NY, with testimony and depositions and important documents. (McLeod was acquitted because of a dubious alibi, causing much anger among the American populace.) Very hard to find. Blue hard paper boards are grubby and worn around the corners, black cloth spine has lost it's bottom half, back cover is skinned. Interior has old book shop label and 1907 owner's inscription. Foxing throughout, old newspaper (ca 1907) clipping at frontis has caused foxing and ghosting, but otherwise clean and sturdy.

Jacobs, Wilbur R. Diplomacy and Indian Gifts. Anglo-French Rivalry Along the Ohio and Northwest Frontiers, 1748-1763 Stanford, California Stanford Univ Pr 1950 Hard Cover Good No Jacket Ex-Library 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall 208 pp. Bibliography, Index. Frontis plate + 6 other b/w plates. Library bound in attractive marblized soft teal buckram. Covers bit aged but sturdy. Interior has normal library impedimenta including pocket but otherwise clean and unmarked. "During the years 1748-1763 it became the policy of the colonies bordering the Ohio and Northwest frontiers to 'brighten the chain of friendship' by giving presents to such influential nations as the members of the Iroquoian confederacy. In some cases the Indians became so accustomed to these frequent outlays of free merchandise that they came to be almost completely dependent upon European goods. After the conquest of Canada by the British these extensive presents were sliced to a bare minimum. It was then the powerful Algonquian tribes, who were formerly allied with the French, felt the pain of the lack of ammunition and clothing... To a surprising degree, therefore, the Indian rebellion under Pontiac was caused by the lack of presents."
