Some pages printed on remarkably different stock. Contains the very scarce printed A before the title. Fairly scarce text detailing the current throughts on the philosopher's stone, numerology, burial ceremonies, different manners of duels and battles, meteors, astronomy, metaphysicks, miracles, etc. Sensitively rebacked, retaining some of the original leather on the boards, which is scuffed and worn but in the state considered "patina" rather than "tired". Judging from the leather on the spine, we would guess the work had been done in the last 50 years. Armorial book plate of Abel John Ram, Esq. affixed directly to the board without any end papers, and an old owner's signature on the back inside bare board. Renewed fly pages. "A" before title page has been remounted, and has numerous signatures of men in the Reeve family "his book" dated in the 1700s, edges of page quite worn. General minor foxing, additional signatures of Reeve family on some of the blanks throughout. Book 3 has a number of pages that had a publisher's error -- there is extra paper at the gutter and this has caused some of the surrounding pages to have a vertical split at the gutter, slightly affecting text. Last few pages quite worn at the edges, not affecting text. Binding is very sturdy. A nice example.
