Williams, Aaron The Harmony Society, at Economy, Penn'A. Founded By George Rapp, A.D. 1805. With an Appendix. Pittsburgh, PA W.S.Haven 1866 1st Edition Cloth Good No Jacket 182 pp. An account of the sect of German primitive Christians, founded by George Rapp, who formed one of the most successful of the communal utopian societies of 19th century America. The Harmonists, or Rappites, eventually founded Economy, PA., and for a while, were a thriving, wealthy community. Ultimately, schisms, arguments over wealth, and a commitment to celibacy, doomed the experiment, which was finally completely over in 1905. Williams' book is hard to find, and a well-respected history of the group, including the early period in Indiana, etc. Original blindstamped sturdy buckram with gilt to the fc, spine head is chipped, bottom spine has a 1/2 chip starting, corners bit rubbed. Interior has remains of a book plate on inside fc, first fly has signature of J.M.Tate, Jr., Swickley, PA, a local collector of information and photographs of Harmony at Economy, whose papers and photos were turned over to the U. of Pittsburgh (mostly) in the 1920s. Contents and introduction have a few small stains, there is occasional foxing, signatures are starting to show, but overall sturdy and clean. Nice copy of an important little book. Price:
