"Sir Arthur Schuster (1851–1934), Langworthy Professor of Physics at the University of Manchester (formerly Owens College) from 1888 to 1907, and pioneer in several areas of scientific study at Manchester. Schuster’s interests were wide-ranging: terrestrial magnetism, optics, solar physics, and the mathematical theory of periodicities. He introduced meteorology as a subject studied in British universities. After his retirement in 1907 he devoted himself to the administration of the Royal Society, and to the organization of international co-operation in science." (University Library of Manchester). Includes a brief memoir with highlights of Sir Arthur's more entertaining moments, along with short biographies of Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier; James Prescott Joule; Balfour Stewart; Gustave Robert Kirchhoff; Robert Wilhelm Bunsen; Ludwig Boltzmann; Samuel Pierpont Langley; Osborne Reynolds; Wilhelm Eduard Weber; Friedrich Wohler; Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Klinkerfues; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz; Heinrich Rudolph Hertz; Wilhelm Conrad von Rontgen; Henry Wilde; Esmatt Effendi, plus an index of names. Dark red cloth cover has some mild staining and a bit of mild rubbing. Spine gilt is bright and legible. Interior quite clean except there is an old London bookshop bookmark which has shadowed its neighboring pages, otherwise quite clean.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
