Boylan, Grace Duffie The Steps to Nowhere New York The Baker & Taylor Company 1910 1st Edition Hard Cover Fair No Jacket Morgan, Ike 230 pp. Hardcover, with 8 color plates by Ike Morgan. This is a hard to find children's book, a first edition, of a "wonder story" that starts in Gramercy Park, New York...and finishes with time travel adventures with "the backward clock" through the "little lost door" to "yesterday in Olde New Amsterdam", to Capt. Kidd's buried treasure in the Hudson River, to the Spanish Main and many other places. 8 full color plates by Ike Morgan. Morgan was the illustrator of the Woggle-Bug Book and was born in Grand Tower, Illinois in 1871. He worked on several Chicago papers and developed a pen-and-ink style which was not particularly different from other newspaper artists. However, in his color work in the Woggle-Bug Book, Boylan's Kids of Many Colors and in this Steps to Nowhere, Morgan's bold illustrations used circles, squares, and rectangles not to enclose but to emphasize the drawings. Sometimes lushly romantic, sometimes exotic and "Oriental", other times just rollickingly fun, the illustrations are a joy to behold. Condition of this hard to find book is fair. Front pastedown is cracked and rubbed, title is rubbed, cloth is worn and fraying at edges. Interior hinges are cracked, old pencil owner's name, some foxing throughout and occasional stains (looks like a child many years ago enjoyed a snack while reading the book). Otherwise, no childish drawings or marks. Aged but the plates are still quite nice. Price:
