Amsterdam Jacques van den Kieboom 1737 First Edition Full-Leather Good with no dust jacket
A quarto measuring 9” x 7”. Binding is very pleasing, an extremely handsome rebinding using renewed old materials. Old contemporary calf boards that have signs of wear with lovely patina were sensitively and expertly rebacked with a spine with 5 raised bands, gilt in the compartments, all beautifully done by this master binder. There are 28 pages of text and 90 engraved plates, all present as called for. The title page is a facsimile printed on old paper, and endpapers are renewed, otherwise all original. Condition is good. A2 repaired at top corners, plate 31 has a clean tear in the fore-edge margin that touches the flag, plates 88 and 89 are out of sequence. Minor foxing otherwise clean. The first 24 plates have the flags identified under each plate in an old French hand (you can see it on the photo of plate 3, above). The book block is solid, hinges firm, spine beautiful and gilt bright. The book is quite beautiful. The engravings are finely done, and each flag is beautifully hand-colored in rich reds, blues, greens and yellows. In general, each full page plate has two flags, but some have one spectacular large flag, and a few have 3 flags per page. The flags are shown bravely waving on staffs. It includes many of the small nation states and principalities of the time, including Genoa, the Isle of Corsica (dependent on Genoa), Tuscany, Dunkerque (ville de la Flandre Francoise), Sleeswik-Holstein, Livonia, Pomerania, as well as Tripoli, Tunis, the Mogol Empire, Nanking, the Emperor of China, the Emperor of the Tartars, Barbary, and many, many, more, both large and small. this book is exceedingly rare - -with only two copies listed at auction for sale in the past 50 years. Worldcat (OCLC) lists only 20 copies held worldwide, virtually all at national libraries such as the Library of Congress, the National Maritime Museum (UK) and the Bibliotheque Nationale de FranceThe book is quite beautiful. The engravings are finely done, and each flag is beautifully hand-colored in rich reds, blues, greens and yellows. The book is a quarto measuring 9” x 7”. Binding is very pleasing, an extremely handsome rebinding using renewed old materials. Old contemporary calf boards that have signs of wear with lovely patina were sensitively and expertly rebacked by the important Felton bookbinding house with a spine with 5 raised bands, gilt in the compartments, all beautifully done by this master binder. The book block is solid, hinges firm, spine beautiful and gilt bright. This is a beautiful book, handsomely bound, of a very scarce title. Very scarce, very beautiful, very desirable. ”A fine and rare work” declared Sotheby's some years back at one of only two auctions of this book over the last fifty years -- illustrating and describing 214 flags used in shipping in the 1700s. The flags are of virtually all the various maritime nations, as well as numerous mercantile companies of the period, including those of the Turks and Mongols. The book is sometimes attributed to Nicolas Aubin (the copy at the Bayerische Staatsbiliothek in Munich is so described) but otherwise no author is mentioned. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall

Brooklyn Trilon Press 1953 First Edition Cloth Good+ with no dust jacket Signed by Author

Narrative of a forced journey through Spain and France, as a prisoner of war, in the years 1810-1814. Volume I AND volume II COMPLETE, Blayney, Major General Lord Andrew Thomas
8 Blayney, Major General Lord Andrew Thomas Narrative of a forced journey through Spain and France, as a prisoner of war, in the years 1810-1814. Volume I AND volume II COMPLETE
London E. Kirby 1814 First Edition Full-Leather Good with no dust jacket
This set is complete, 494 and 504 pages, two octavo hardcover volumes beautifully bound in full leather, measuring 8.5" x 5". It is in good antiquarian condition, hinges weakening on both volumes but holding by cords and what appear to be early repairs, gilt bright on leather, each spine divided by five bands into six panels, with gilt designs, one green leather panel with volume number, and red leather with title, volume one title is torn, leather mostly smooth, with minor chipping on spine edges and on boards on volume one, volume two with some more chipping on the rear board. Book blocks solid, minor age toning and foxing, printing sharp; a beautiful set. This is a famous and scarce Napoleonic era narrative, beautifully bound in full leather with gilt lettering and designs and with both finely engraved plates, by the commander of Blayney's Bloodhounds, Major General Andrew Thomas Blayney, 11th Baron Blayney, an Anglo-Irish peer and known as "one of the most illustrious soldiers ever to come from County Monaghan." During a raid from Gibraltar into Spain he was captured, and while a prisoner and during his parole, he met a number of illustrious Napoleonic generals and surveyed the area. This is his famous and important account, the scarce 1814 first edition, complete with two finely engraved plates, one of the prison castle fortress, and the other of General Blayney in Napoleonic era uniform. " The main strength of the narrative is the author's eye to detail and his flair for recounting a tale, along with the real rarity of accounts from the point of view of an English prisoner of war."; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 999 pages

Narses, Hammer of the Goths: The Life and Times of Narses the Eunuch, Fauber, Lawrence
19 Fauber, Lawrence Narses, Hammer of the Goths: The Life and Times of Narses the Eunuch
New York St Martins Press 1990 0312041268 / 9780312041267 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Good dust jacket
[viii] 239 pp. Notes, bibliography, index. Illustrated 10 figs and 8 plates. Blue dust jacket with mosaic image of narses is clean, a bit of edge curl/wear at edges and corners. Book itself has pencil erasures on first blank, otherwise clean and fresh. Nice copy. The 6th century in Italy could still claim such enlightened names as Theodoric, Boethius and Pope Gregory the reat. On a par with all these, and serving as a link, was a small Armenian who has largely been forgotten by later historians. Narses the Eunuch served as a court official in Constantinople for most of his life,. His survival for so long in a hot bed of intrigue like the byzantine Court is unusual enough, but in 551 AD when he was well into his 70s, Narses was chosen as Supreme Commander for Justinian's final attempt to reconquer Italy. Where Belisarius had failed, Narses succeeded. The powerful Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy was destroyed and the Goths were driven from the history books. Narses then defeated an invasion by the Franks and Alammani. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall

20 Feuchtwanger, Lion. Trans By Elisabeth Abbott The Devil in France. My Encounter with Him in the Summer of 1940
New York The Viking Press 1941 First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
265 pp. Stated 1st edition. This is the stated first world edition of Feuchtwanger's tale of his imprisonment as an "enemy alien" in war-time France in 1940. He escaped from one camp, only to have to escape a second time, before finally making his way to freedom and New York, where he immediately began writing this book. Feuchtwanger was an excellent, penetrating writer, his narrative all the more poignant because of his Jewish background. It was published in German in Mexico in 1942 and finally published in Germany in 1954. Red cloth is rubbed and bumped at the corners, spine tips rubbed, title and spine gilt faded and only just legible, bottom edge has a short black mark parallel to spine. Interior end papers are foxed, paper is strong but lightly toned, pages 130-154 have a light bump at bottom edge, pages 155-158 have small chip at bottom edge, otherwise clean and nice.
