8 Farnell, Lewis Richard The Cults of the Greek States, Vol. I, II, III, IV and V
Oxford Clarendon Press 1896 First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
1896-1905, 5 Volumes, complete. First planned as a 3 volume set, then 2 more vols were completed. xx,423; x,425-761, 16; xii, 393; viii, 454, plates, ads; xii, 495 pp, ads. Index in vol. V. Illustrated throughout with many b/w plates. Matching handsome dark green pebbled cloth with blind ruling to the covers, gold filets to the spine with gilt Oxford insignia. All volumes have white library numbers on bottom spine as well as normal library markings. Some rubbing at the corners, Vol. I spine tips are more worn than the others. Vol V pages were never separated. Interiors otherwise clean, sturdy. A handsome set, very heavy for international shipping -- please enquire re rates. The works were groundbreaking because it was the first time that any scholar, let alone an Oxford scholar, had attempted to disentangle the history of Greek religion from that of Greek mythology. There was need for the two to be separated since Greek mythology had at the time, in literary circles at any rate, a reputation of being a "bizarre and hopeless thing" The first volume has twelve chapters focussing on the beginnings of cult in Greece and the cults of Cronos, Zeus, Hera and Athena. The second volume focusses on Artemis, Hecate, Eileithyia and Aphrodite. The third volume focusses on Demeter, Kore-Persephone, and Hades/Plouton, followed by the fourth volume, which focusses on Poseidon and Apollo. The fifth, and final, volume focusses on Hermes, Dionysus, Hestia, Hephaestus, Ares and minor cults. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
