3 Adams, Alison, editor/translator The Romance of Yder
Cambridge D.S.Brewer 1983 0859911330 / 9780859911337 Hardcover Good in Good dust jacket
Vi + 259 pp. Critical notes, index of proper names. Text in old French, else English. Pink paper dust jacket is sunned at spine and top edges, small pen mark, general mild edge wear, flaps intact. Book itself is sound on the outside, interior has small marks on first free endpaper, a very few pencil marks to the text, otherwise clean and nice. The first translation of a manuscript in Cambridge University Library. A highly interesting work, reflecting a tradition which reaches back to the beginnings of ARthurian romance in the early 12th century and is linked to the sculpture on the cathedral at modena. It is close in style and sometimes content to the work of Chretien de Troyes and may have been written in the Plantagent domains during the reign of King John. ItThe text has particular interest because one episode foreshadows the temptation scene in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, while elsewhere Celtic material is much in evidence as the basis of the tale. ; Arthurian Studies; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 259 pages

5 Aubin, Nicolas (attributed) [La Connoissance des Pavillons ou Bannieres, que la plûpart des nations arborent en mer.] with 90 Hand-Colored Plates
Amsterdam Jacques van den Kieboom 1737 First Edition Full-Leather Good with no dust jacket
A quarto measuring 9” x 7”. Binding is very pleasing, an extremely handsome rebinding using renewed old materials. Old contemporary calf boards that have signs of wear with lovely patina were sensitively and expertly rebacked with a spine with 5 raised bands, gilt in the compartments, all beautifully done by this master binder. There are 28 pages of text and 90 engraved plates, all present as called for. The title page is a facsimile printed on old paper, and endpapers are renewed, otherwise all original. Condition is good. A2 repaired at top corners, plate 31 has a clean tear in the fore-edge margin that touches the flag, plates 88 and 89 are out of sequence. Minor foxing otherwise clean. The first 24 plates have the flags identified under each plate in an old French hand (you can see it on the photo of plate 3, above). The book block is solid, hinges firm, spine beautiful and gilt bright. The book is quite beautiful. The engravings are finely done, and each flag is beautifully hand-colored in rich reds, blues, greens and yellows. In general, each full page plate has two flags, but some have one spectacular large flag, and a few have 3 flags per page. The flags are shown bravely waving on staffs. It includes many of the small nation states and principalities of the time, including Genoa, the Isle of Corsica (dependent on Genoa), Tuscany, Dunkerque (ville de la Flandre Francoise), Sleeswik-Holstein, Livonia, Pomerania, as well as Tripoli, Tunis, the Mogol Empire, Nanking, the Emperor of China, the Emperor of the Tartars, Barbary, and many, many, more, both large and small. this book is exceedingly rare - -with only two copies listed at auction for sale in the past 50 years. Worldcat (OCLC) lists only 20 copies held worldwide, virtually all at national libraries such as the Library of Congress, the National Maritime Museum (UK) and the Bibliotheque Nationale de FranceThe book is quite beautiful. The engravings are finely done, and each flag is beautifully hand-colored in rich reds, blues, greens and yellows. The flags are of virtually all the various maritime nations, as well as numerous mercantile companies of the period, including those of the Turks and Mongols. The book is sometimes attributed to Nicolas Aubin (the copy at the Bayerische Staatsbiliothek in Munich is so described) but otherwise no author is mentioned. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall

Histoire des variations des eglises protestantes., Bossuet, Jacques-Bénigne
20 Bossuet, Jacques-Bénigne Histoire des variations des eglises protestantes.
Paris Chez la veuve de Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy 1688 First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
This is the rare first edition, two leather bound volumes, complete, from the important Mendham Collection of what is perhaps the most important work of one of the greatest Catholic orators and theologians, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet. It dates back to 1688 and is bound in full calf leather with several engraved initials and head or tail pieces. The set is complete, two volumes, each volume measuring 6 ¼” by 4” [16 lvs.] , 406 pp., [15 lvs] , [3] 524 [19 lvs] in fair to good antiquarian condition. BIndings are holding but weakening; boards show wear, spines chipped, pages unmarked except for title pages with old monastic inscriptions (from whom Mendham purchased them?) and Law LIbrary bookplates. This book is quite rare: Worldcat (OCLC) lists only 6 copies in this 12mo format worldwide; and 41 copies in a quarto format. It has an important provenance as well, it comes from the great Law Society of England and Wales Library, which sold off a portion of its collection which had been donated by the Church scholar and clergyman Joseph Mendham; these two first editions comprised an integral part of the Mendham Collection. “In 1688, his great Histoire des variations des Églises protestantes ("History of the Variations of the Protestant Churches"), perhaps the most brilliant of all his works, appeared. Few writers could have made the Justification controversy interesting or even intelligible. His argument is simple enough. Without rules, an organized society cannot hold together, and rules require an authorized interpreter. The Protestant churches had thrown over this interpreter; and Bossuet had small trouble in showing that, the longer they lived, the more they varied on increasingly important points.” ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall
