Interior has a small scar to first fly, paper a bit browned, but otherwise clean and sturdy. Extraordinarily scarce.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall

New York Harper & Brothers 1846 First Edition Cloth Good with no dust jacket 
viii + 9-384 pp. Frontis plate of A. Proudfit with tissue protector. A look at the life and times of Alexander Moncrief Proudfit (1770-1843). He entered the ministry of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and was made pastor of the congregation at Salem, N.Y., in 1795 (following his father) where he lived until 1835, when he became agent of the American Colonization Society. He resigned that post in 1842 and died in 1843. Dark brown ribbed Victorian cloth has blindstamped floral design to covers, spine gilt is bright, corners of boards are rubbed, spine top is chipped, spine bottom has lost 1.5" of the backstrip. Interior is clean, foxed throughout, signatures showing but sturdy. Hard to find. ; Small 8vo

The Society of the Cincinnati was organized upon the dissolution of the American Revolutionary Army as a charitable organization to take care of the widows, orphans and others made ill or indigent because of the war. George Washington was its first President. This large volume records all of those who were admitted to the Massachusetts branch of the Society from 1783 to 1929, with short biographies of each. Also includes the annals of the Society as well as the by-laws and rules. An interesting historical document, a treasure trove for genealogists. Dark blue cloth cover has gilt eagle insignia on fc, gilt spine which is bright and legible but spine is stained. Interior fly pages are foxed, occasional small foxing in the text.; Large 8vo

Interior has many notes, paper clips, newspaper cuttings, etc., from some previous owner who was very interested in or involved with the church -- some are interesting, such as a margin note stating that a mason who was paid $190 in 1834 also built "Colonnade Row". Glued in at the inside back cover is a letter from the woman who sold this book in 1974 with additional architectural information on various sites in NYC, etc. Not a perfect copy of this scarce volume, but an interesting one, and still handsome.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
