4 Binion, Samuel A. Phyllanthography: A Method of Leaf and Flower Writing; and a Basket of Choice Roses

5 Blakeley, Al Ethelred (pseud. Alfred E. Blake) Convoy to India
Brooklyn Trilon Press 1953 First Edition Cloth Good+ with no dust jacket Signed by Author
214 pp; Signed on the first fly "To Hi, with best wishes, Al. E. Blakeley". A war-time diary written by an African American soldier in the segregated American army during World War II. The author traveled through Africa, the Middle East, Burma, Pakistan, and India. His view of the war and world from the inside is interesting enough, but he also feels sympathy for the downtrodden people of color he sees on his travels and reports on their culture, condition and hopes, as well. Dark red cover is clean and bright with traces of an impression (as though someone used the book as a prop for writing). Silver gilt is bright, top of spine is chipped. First fly has signature and a small green crayon mark, otherwise the interior is clean and very crisp. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; Signed by Author

Narrative of a forced journey through Spain and France, as a prisoner of war, in the years 1810-1814. Volume I AND volume II COMPLETE, Blayney, Major General Lord Andrew Thomas
6 Blayney, Major General Lord Andrew Thomas Narrative of a forced journey through Spain and France, as a prisoner of war, in the years 1810-1814. Volume I AND volume II COMPLETE
London E. Kirby 1814 First Edition Full-Leather Good with no dust jacket
This set is complete, 494 and 504 pages, two octavo hardcover volumes beautifully bound in full leather, measuring 8.5" x 5". It is in good antiquarian condition, hinges weakening on both volumes but holding by cords and what appear to be early repairs, gilt bright on leather, each spine divided by five bands into six panels, with gilt designs, one green leather panel with volume number, and red leather with title, volume one title is torn, leather mostly smooth, with minor chipping on spine edges and on boards on volume one, volume two with some more chipping on the rear board. Book blocks solid, minor age toning and foxing, printing sharp; a beautiful set. This is a famous and scarce Napoleonic era narrative, beautifully bound in full leather with gilt lettering and designs and with both finely engraved plates, by the commander of Blayney's Bloodhounds, Major General Andrew Thomas Blayney, 11th Baron Blayney, an Anglo-Irish peer and known as "one of the most illustrious soldiers ever to come from County Monaghan." During a raid from Gibraltar into Spain he was captured, and while a prisoner and during his parole, he met a number of illustrious Napoleonic generals and surveyed the area. This is his famous and important account, the scarce 1814 first edition, complete with two finely engraved plates, one of the prison castle fortress, and the other of General Blayney in Napoleonic era uniform. " The main strength of the narrative is the author's eye to detail and his flair for recounting a tale, along with the real rarity of accounts from the point of view of an English prisoner of war."; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 999 pages

9 Cibber, Colley (Lowe, Robert W., Ed.) An Apology for the Life of Mr. Colley Cibber, Written By Himself, A New Edition with Notes and Supplement By Robert W. Lowe, in Two Volumes
London John C. Nimmo 1889 First Edition Thus Cloth Fair with no dust jacket Illustrated by Parkes, R.B. & Lalauze, Adolphe
In 2 volumes, 337 pp & 416 pp, 26 original mezzotint portraits by R.B. Parkes and 18 etching by Adolphe Lalauze, limited edition of 510 copies, this is number 307. A new edition of the 1740 original autobiography of Colley Cibber, "interspersed with characters and anecdotes of his theatrical contemporaries, the whole forming a complete history of the stage for the space of forty years". Cibber was the Poet Laureate of England (a purely political appointment apparently) and a historian of the English theater. Lowe compared all six previous editions of Cibber's work, carefully going back to the original and what was known of Cibber's corrections. In addition he has brought a number of rare documents, including Historia Histrionica, a copy of the Patent granted to Sir William Davenant, and a supplementary chapter which includes "the chief incidents of theatrical history up to the time of Cibber's death" along with the story of his famous quarrel with Pope, and a list of Cibber's dramatic productions and a biblography of works by or relating to him. The book is ex-library with all the usual markings and has a dark red library binding with gilt spine, handsome, but nothing like the original leather. A number of the fly pages are loosening. The library strengthened the pages containing the truly beautiful mezzotints, but in doing so caused stress on the text pages resulting in cracks at the top of neighboring pages. In Vol. II, page 307 is loose and another page has a chip out of the corner, slightly affecting text. The mezzotints, however, are in good condition, and they alone are worth the price of admission. A reading copy set with beautiful plates.; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
