Imagining an English Reading Public, 1150-1400, Breen, Dr Katharine
20 Breen, Dr Katharine Imagining an English Reading Public, 1150-1400
Cambridge University Press 2010 0521199220 / 9780521199223 First Edition Hardcover Good in Good dust jacket
X + 287 pp + ads. Notes, bibliography, index. Illustrated. In English with some Latin and Old English. Green and gold glossy dustjacket has very minor shelf wear, interior has some pencil marks on first blank, otherwise fresh and clean. The original study explores the importance of the concept of habitus, the set of acquired patterns of thought, behavior and taste that result from internalizing culture or objective social structures. Beginning by examining medieval theories of habitus in a general sense, Breen goes on to investigate the relationships between habitus, language and Christian virtue. As the vernacular languages took over from Latin, they laid the conceptual foundations for an English reading public, Breen argues. Includes a case study of Piers Plowman. ; Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 300 pages
