9 folios in slip cases, hundreds of color plates, bilingual Chinese/English. This is a very scarce and magnificent set of slipcased folio volumes, the complete set of the “Sculpture” series from the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Each book is bound with maroon leather spine and black cloth boards, with bright gilt. The slip cases are matching black cloth with bright gilt and brighter maroon cloth edges. The set is in near fine condition, the only wear being some rubbing on the leather joints where the surfaces rub when the book is pulled out of the case and on the edge of the case corresponding to the rubbing spot. They books fit into the cases very tightly and it takes some effort to get them out. The interiors are clean, fresh and bright, virtually untouched. Covers are clean and fresh, as well, although the cloth has a tendency to show dust and friction easily – but they are very nice, indeed. The folios are 15” x 10.5” and extremely heavy due to the high quality paper used. Each volume weighs about 8 pounds (3.6 kgs). The books really are beautiful. “The advanced lithography technology and high-quality bookbinding make the Compendium..an artwork in itself, worth treasuring. Each of the cultural artifacts selected in the books is extremely precious and rarely seen in public, with a high value for archaeological and scientific research. The publication of the work, presents these beautiful artifacts in a systematic, comprehensive way and turns them into cultural resources. ”Vol. I: Funereal Figures and Molds from the Warring States Period to the Southern and Northern DynastiesVol. 2: Funereal Figures and Molds of the Sui and Tang Dynasties Vol. 1Vol. 3: Funereal Figures and Molds of the Sui and Tang Dynasties Vol. 2Vol. 4: Funereal Figures and Molds of the Song, Yuan and Ming DynastiesVol. 5: Stone and Brick CarvingsVol. 6: Brass and Stone SculpturesVol. 7: Buddhist Figures UnearthedVol. 8: Sculptures in Porcelain and ClayVol. 9: Figures in Wood, Bamboo and Dry Lacquer; Folio 13" - 23" tall
